Pflugerville History

Pflugerville is located north of Austin and south of Round Rock, as reflected in their motto, “between a rock and a weird place.” Though it was only incorporated in 1965, the city was founded over a century earlier and named after German settler, Henry Pfluger. It expanded rapidly in 1904 with the arrival of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad, and again between 1980 and 1988 when it was named the fastest growing community in Texas. The current estimated population is around 50 thousand.

Two state highways provide easy access to Pflugerville area attractions, such as the Blackhawk Golf Club, and the new Stone Hill Town Center, a large shopping center featuring many big name stores including a Super Target, Best Buy, and Dick’s Sporting Goods, as well as a Cinemark Theatres. Lake Pflugerville is a great place to swim, hike, picnic, or hit the playground, and Austin’s Park on IH 35 offers mini golf, go carts, bumper boats, laser tag, and much more! Despite all of these major attractions, downtown Pflugerville still boasts a small town feel, with many small local businesses along Pecan and Main Street. In fact, the popular NBC drama, “Friday Night Lights,” set in fictional small town, Dillon, Texas, was actually filmed at Pflugerville High School’s Kuempel Stadium and other parts of Pflugerville and Austin!
